Is area code 831 a scam?
No. Area code 831 is a legitimate area code serving Salinas since 1998. Scammers spoof caller ID to display 831 numbers, which is why complaints exist against a code that is itself genuine.
Neighbour spoofing is the reason a local-looking number is not a guarantee. A caller anywhere in the world can display a 831 number, and the number they display may belong to a real business in Salinas that has nothing to do with the call.

Who works in the Salinas area?
Area code 831 covers California's central coast, with Salinas as its largest city and the seat of Monterey County. The economy here starts in the ground. The Salinas Valley is called the Salad Bowl of the World for a reason: lettuce, strawberries, broccoli, and wine grapes move out of this valley at industrial scale, and the businesses behind them include growers like Taylor Farms and Fresh Express alongside a growing agricultural technology sector that builds field robotics and irrigation software. The same area code takes in Monterey and Carmel, where hospitality and tourism dominate, and Santa Cruz, which leans on its university and a coastal tech economy. Salinas itself had a population of 161,761 and a median household income of $91,908 in 2024, per DataUSA, though a median property value of $654,100 in the same year shows how hard the housing math is for the people who work the fields and the hotel desks.
Who lives in the 831 region
The region's demographics follow its industries. Salinas has a large Mexican-American population, and Spanish is spoken widely in homes and workplaces across the valley. Agricultural business runs on relationships and seasons, and callers describe phone habits that match: early mornings are normal in Salinas, California, because harvest logistics do not wait, while the tourism businesses on the Monterey Peninsula keep more conventional hours. An 831 number signals a genuinely local operation across a region where growers, packers, and shippers have known each other for generations. Callers from outside should expect Pacific Time and should not be surprised when a call to a produce company at 6 a.m. gets answered on the second ring.
