Is area code 629 a scam?
No. Area code 629 is a legitimate area code serving Nashville since 2015. Scammers spoof caller ID to display 629 numbers, which is why complaints exist against a code that is itself genuine.
Neighbour spoofing is the reason a local-looking number is not a guarantee. A caller anywhere in the world can display a 629 number, and the number they display may belong to a real business in Nashville that has nothing to do with the call.

Nashville runs on more than music. The city produced $116.9 billion in GDP in 2024, and while the country music industry gives it the Music City name, health care is the heavier economic engine: HCA Healthcare, one of the largest hospital operators in the country, is headquartered here, alongside AllianceBernstein, Asurion, Bridgestone Americas, and Ryman Hospitality. Publishing, banking, automotive suppliers, and a growing technology sector round out the base. The metro of 2.15 million people is the 35th largest in the country and among the fastest growing in the United States.
Who lives in the 629 region
Nashville, Tennessee counted 689,447 residents at the 2020 census, with a 2025 estimate above 721,000. The growth is visible in who answers the phone: a steady inflow of corporate relocations and young professionals layered onto a Southern city with deep local roots. Vanderbilt, Tennessee State, Belmont, Fisk, and Lipscomb universities keep the workforce young and educated. The city has a meaningful Spanish-speaking population, and hospitality and entertainment employ a large share of workers, though precise city-level industry counts were not available from DataUSA at the time of writing.
What a 629 number signals to a caller
In the phone system, area code 629 was overlaid on 615 in 2015, so long-established Nashville businesses tend to hold 615 numbers, a code with enough cultural cachet that it shows up in song titles. A 629 number marks a newer line, which in a city defined by newcomers carries no stigma. Callers describe the business style as warm before it is transactional: a minute of genuine small talk is generally expected, and skipping it reads as abrupt. Nashville sits in the Central time zone, which surprises callers who assume Eastern.
