Is area code 603 a scam?
No. Area code 603 is a legitimate area code serving Manchester since 1947. Scammers spoof caller ID to display 603 numbers, which is why complaints exist against a code that is itself genuine.
Neighbour spoofing is the reason a local-looking number is not a guarantee. A caller anywhere in the world can display a 603 number, and the number they display may belong to a real business in Manchester that has nothing to do with the call.

Manchester's median household income reached $81,007 in 2024, growing 4.64% year over year, with an employed population of about 68,000, per DataUSA. What a 603 number signals to a caller
Doing business in the 603 tends toward the direct and unpretentious. Callers describe New Hampshire contacts as brisk but courteous, with a strong preference for getting to the point, and a local 603 number carries weight in a state where the code doubles as regional identity on bumper stickers and craft beer labels. Ten-digit dialing is now standard even within the single code. Firms selling into Manchester generally find that answering calls with knowledge of the state's tax structure is expected, since it is often the reason the prospect is there.
